made for the exposition ‘Ode aan het Landschap’ in Maarssen
A playful interpretation of a Marian altar shows the Iconic background that is inextricably linked to our transition to the digital.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the transition to the digital was everywhere, paper was replaced by Microsoft Word and mail by email. The computer became more and more a part of our daily lives and so the image of Bliss – the iconic Windows XP background – came into our view more and more often. Bliss, a photograph shot by Charles O’Rear symbolizes the beauty of nature and squarely opposes the digital power of the administrative program of which she is the default background. The image encapsulates a longing for a time when man’s work environment was not an office but the outside world, a time when we were more in touch with the nature around us.
TAKE ME HOME places ‘Bliss’ on an altar and wants to take us back (if only for a moment) to a time when the digital was not yet so completely interwoven with our lives, or even to a time when man and nature were not yet separated by technology. Shaped like an altar, the work symbolizes our belief in technological development, should we revere it or abhor it?

Een speelse interpretatie van een maria-altaar toont de Iconische achtergrond die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met onze transitie naar het digitale.
In het begin van de 21ste eeuw stond de transitie naar het digitale centraal, papier werd vervangen door Microsoft Word en post door e-mail. De computer werd steeds meer deel van ons dagelijks leven en zo kwam het beeld van Bliss – de iconische Windows XP achtergrond – steeds vaker in ons zicht. Bliss, een foto geschoten door Charles O'Rear staat symbool voor de schoonheid van natuur en haaks tegenover de digitale kracht van het bestuursprogramma waarvan ze de standaard-achtergrond vormt. Het beeld omvangt een verlangen naar een tijd waarin niet een bureau maar de buitenwereld de werkomgeving van de mens was, een tijd waarin we meer in aanraking stonden met de natuur oms ons heen.
TAKE ME HOME zet ‘Bliss’ op een altaar en wil ons (als is het maar voor even) terugbrengen naar de tijd waarin het digitale nog niet zo compleet verweven was met ons leven of verder nog naar de tijd waarin mens en natuur nog niet gescheiden werden door technologie. Vormgegeven als een altaar staat het werk symbool voor ons geloof in technologische ontwikkeling, moeten we deze vereren of verafschuwen?
