PROJECT DODO: An exoskeleton for the dodo
The dodo became extinct in the late 17th century due to human activities. According to the famous French naturalist Buffon, the bird was responsible for its own demise. The dodo was deemed unfit to survive. How can we ensure that the dodo can withstand the dangers of the 21st century?
With technological fixes, we attempt to solve every problem. But there might be another way. If we look at nature, there are many complex processes, yet we do not perceive them as complicated. As a case study, we take the dodo. Recently, scientists have been trying to genetically map this extinct bird using DNA from bone remains. What if they succeed, and the dodo comes face to face with the dangers of the 21st century?
The dodo had no natural enemies on the remote Mauritius until the island became a supply station for the Dutch VOC fleet, making the tame dodo an easy prey. Can we retroactively help the dodo to defend itself against the current dangers the island faces? SETUP explores with PROJECT DODO how we can make the dodo 21st century-proof. So that when the dodo returns among us, we ensure that it is ready for its new life on contemporary Mauritius.

De dodo is eind 17e eeuw door toedoen van de mens uitgestorven. Volgens de beroemde Franse natuurhistoricus Buffon had de vogel dat aan zichzelf te danken. De dodo was ongeschikt om te overleven. Hoe zorgen we ervoor dat de dodo bestand is tegen de gevaren van de 21e eeuw?
Met technologische fixes proberen we elk probleem op te lossen. Maar dat moet ook anders kunnen. Als we kijken naar de natuur zijn daar ook veel complexe processen, maar die ervaren we niet als complex. Als casus nemen we daarom de dodo. Sinds kort proberen wetenschappers deze verdwenen vogel genetisch in kaart te brengen, aan de hand van DNA uit botresten. Wat als dat lukt en de dodo oog in oog komt te staan met de gevaren van de 21e eeuw?
De dodo had op het afgelegen Mauritius geen natuurlijke vijanden. Totdat het eiland een bevoorradingsstation werd voor de Nederlandse VOC-vloot en de tamme dodo een makkelijke prooi werd. Kunnen we de dodo met terugwerkende kracht helpen om zich te wapenen tegen de gevaren die het eiland nu te bieden heeft? SETUP onderzoekt met PROJECT DODO hoe we de dodo 21st century proof kunnen maken. Zodat áls het zo ver is en de dodo weer onder ons is, wij zorgen dat hij klaar is voor zijn nieuwe leven op hedendaags Mauritius.
