ZELFSPELENDE FLUITSELF PLAYING FLUTE

        Worden we bewogen door muziek door de pure schoonheid van de muzikale compositie, de emotie die de componist in het stuk heeft gebracht of komt het doordat de compositie onze emoties en innerlijke reflectie in een abstracte en rauwe vorm kan reflecteren?

De Robot fluit is een ontdekking of AI menselijke emoties met muziek kan repliceren en composities kan creëren door middel van onze emoties. De installatie doet dit door onze gezichten te lezen, en op basisvan onze gezichtsuitdrukking de emoties af te lezen en daarmee te componeren. Omdat deze Robot Fluit een pionier is op het gebied van robots die menselijke emoties omzetten in muziek, is het van belang om bij de pure basis te beginnen, namelijk, met het leren van een emotionele composities op een blokfluit. Are we moved to tears by music because of the sheer beauty of the musical composition, the emotion the componist has poured into the piece, or is it because compositions emit emotions in an abstract and raw form that reflect our inner feelings?

Robot Flute is an exploration of whether AI can replicate human emotions with music and make compositions emotional by learning from our emotions. The installation does this by reading the expressions on our faces and basing their composition on the emotion corresponding to our expression. Because Robot Flute is a pioneer amongst robots when it comes to translating human emotions into music, it is necessary also to start at the very basis we humans also started: namely, by learning to play emotional compositions with a recorder flute.

The Self playing flute premiered during the exhibition ‘Robots love Music’ in Museum Speelklok in 2018 and has since traveled to multiple locations and made a special guest appearance at the Casper de Jong Short Film Festival of Inanimate Beings.
